In the Pilot, Nick is still struggling with his breakup from Caroline. In Season 1 episode 7 we find out that at one point Nick had a Nanny, Showing that at one point Nick's parents weren't around much. He was becoming very arrogant and rude which made him leave Law school because he wanted to be a better person.
